2012 Premier and Senior 1st Grade Competition Format
There are two separate competitions for the Premiers and Senior First grades this year.

Buck Shelford Shield and the Chris Kennings Shield Competitions

In this Competition the Premier grade plays for the Buck Shelford Shield and the Senior 1st grade plays for the Chris Kennings Shield.

The 10 teams are split into two sections of five teams based on 2011 Premier grade finishing order (for both grades) as at season end, using the formula applied in the last three years as follows:

The Competitions start on Sat 31 March, with no play on Easter weekend (7 April) then the remaining games are played 14 April, 21 April, 28 April and 5 May with Cross-over Finals on 12 May.

To remove the bye in both sections, each team will play an additional competition fixture against a team from the other section based on the 2011 Premier grade finishing order – 1 v 10, 2 v 9, 3 v 8, 4 v 7 and 5 v 6.

Cross-over finals will be held at one club venue for the Premiers and another club venue for the Senior Firsts with the 1st placed team in White Section playing the 1st placed team in Cardinal Section and so on through to the 5th placed teams in each section playing each other.

Points are 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, and 1 bonus point for scoring 4 tries and 1 bonus point for finishing within 7 or less points. A default win is 5 points.

Points do not carry forward from this competition to the ASB Cup and the Stuart Cup competitions.

ASB Cup and Stuart Cup Competitions

In this competition the Premiers play for the ASB Cup and the Senior Firsts for the Stuart Cup.

The 10 teams play each other in a full round of 9 games.

The Competitions start on Sat 19 May with games being played over the next 8 weeks with the final round on Sat 14 July.

On Sat 21 July the top 4 finishing teams after the full round will compete in the Championship semi-finals (1v4 and 2v3), teams finishing 5-8 will complete in the Plate semi-finals (5v8 and 6v7) and teams finishing 9 and 10 will play the Bowl final. The semi-finals and Bowl final will be played at the home of the top finishing club.

On Sat 28 July the winning semi-finalist teams will compete in the Championship and the Plate finals at North Harbour Stadium.

Points are 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, and 1 bonus point for scoring 4 tries and 1 bonus point for finishing within 7 or less points. A default win is 5 points.

Home and Away.
Home and away games are equal for all teams over both competitions totalling 7 home and 7 away each. Details are as follows:

Other Trophies.
The Les Pearce Memorial Shield. This is a Premier grade challenge shield and is played at the home venue of the current holder. It is not played for during semi-finals and finals.
The Country Cup. This is a Premier grade challenge trophy competed for by the country clubs – Western(Helensville and Kumeu), Mahurangi and Silverdale. The trophy is played for in all country club fixtures ie. home or away or during finals.
